More About Battersea

Battersea is an inner-city district of south London, located in the London Borough of Wandsworth and it is mainly a residential area. It the past it was a part of Surrey. It was centred in a church which was on an island in the small river Falconbrook which flows to the River Thames. The other main settlement area was by the St. Mary’s Church (it hosted the marriage of the famous English poet William Blake).

The area began its agricultural activities with the main ones being growing lavender, asparagus and pig breeding. Later on, many industries started growing – mills, breweries, calico printing, etc. Afterwards, many different industries and firms began thriving along the River Thames as it provided access to transportation.

There was a decline in the industry in the 1970s as the attention was turned towards the problem with the housing in the area. The railway station has two main lines crossing and it makes it the busiest station in the country.
