More About Earl’s Court
Earl’s Court is an area in central London, within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and borders of course, with Chelsea and Kensington. The name of the area, which was once a rural area covered in gardens and green fields, is ancient and comes from the Vere family (the Earls of Oxford) which was the owner of the land for over 500 years.
It was only after the construction of the railway station in the late 19th century when the development of the area begun and it turned into a very populated suburb with about 1,200 houses, and not one but two churches. One of the area’s most notable attractions was the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre which had hosted many exhibitions, sports events, concerts and even award shows. But sadly it was closed in 2014.
Other landmarks, one of which is the Empress State Building that has a unique façade and architecture that is now the home of the Metropolitan police. The Finborough Theatre is still standing after it was opened in 1980. What is more, the area was once the home of many famous people – Diana, Princess of Wales, Alfred Hitchcock, Edwain Arnold and Howard Carter. The area has kept its beautiful gardens and mid-Victorian architecture.
